My brother in India was recently diagnosed with Metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma in lungs. His biopsy says 'The tumor cells express hepocyte specific antigen (OCH1E5). His PET scan report is as follows :
Begin Report
- Abnormal F-FDG uptake noted in
- Spiculated mass legion in right hilar region with areas of necrosis within (SUV = 2.4)
- Mutliple parenchymal nodules in bilateral lung fields (SUV maximum = 1.5)
- Normal physiological F-FDG tracer uptake is seen in brain, pharyngeal, tnsils, vocal cord, myocardium , liver, gut, and urinary bladder.
- No abnormal F-FDG tracer uptake seen anywhere else in the body
Comments :
- Evidence of metabolically active disease in right hilar mass and multiple bilateral parenchymal nodules.
- Findings suggestive of right lung neoplasm with metastatis (stage 4 disease).
END Report
My brother had a liver transplant done in Aug 2007 because of Hepatitis B (He had cirrosis and also had Cancer in the liver). But at that time the doctors had suggested that the cancer had not spread out of his liver and with the new liver he should be good. So far he was doing good but apparently there were some cancel cells remaining which have now spread to his lungs. Physically he looks active and does not have any symptoms other than a nagging cough.
The doctors in India have said the surgery or chemotherapy is not an option and want him to start on Nexavar.
So now were are looking for other options/second opinion. I would like to know if you would recommend treatment with CK for him or any other options you can suggest.
Regards, yali

It is unlikely that he can get everything treated with CK successfully, although it depends in part on what number of nodules there are. You might want to contact a center there in India and see what they recommend.
