My Mom was diagnosed with colon cancer Jan this year(distance from anal verge –5 cm ), she had mets to liver. She had 6 cycles of chemo (FolFox plus Avastin) and recent scans reports shows 10% shrink in liver mets ( she have 3 mets ). She and started another 4 cycles for same chemo treatment hoping it can shrink more and remove by surgery. Her Chemo ends next month Sep 2nd and she due for second CT on Sep 16th. Her doctor goal is to do one surgery and try to remove the rectal tumor and liver mets at same time. We are considering Cyber knife treatment and would like to know if she is a good candidate for the treatment. Thanks Eric

The rectal cancer needs to be removed surgically. CK could potentially treat the liver tumors

There are probably other liver metastases present that may not be visible at this point.  For that reason, CK would probably have little impact on overall survival.   Nonetheless, if there are no other viable systemic options, then it would be worth considering.

Good Evening;

My 53 yr old very healthy sister- presented in ER w/ abdominal pain which started 5 days prior. Diagnosed in April with Colon cancer w/ mets to Ovary and Liver.  13 rounds of Chemo: 5FU/ Oxali/ Leucovorin / Avastin.   Tumors are responding. From April to October 23rd  LIVER: Left  --April 7.1 x 5.6  --Now 4.6 x3.2   Right 6.8 x  to  3.6 x 2.1   OVARY Left  12x16 to Now 8.6 x 6.4  Right 11x12 to Now 5.6 x 8.3  Sigmoid COLON:2.9 x 2.6 to now 2.0 x 2.6  We have scheduled January Lapro surgery to remove Ovary and colon  MY QUESTIONS:   #1. since she will be off Chemo for 6 wks prior and 6 wks after do you think surgery good idea.  #2. After recovery would she be candidate for CK? #3. where in Chicago Metro or Midwest would be best to seek consult.

#1 Generally speaking, yes.  If you are uncertain, you should obtain a second opinion from a gynecologic oncologist, perhaps at a university hospital in Chicago or elsewhere.  You have many excellent facilities to choose from.

#2 She would need to be reevaluated after the surgery to see whether there are any remaining lesions in the liver or elsewhere that might be amenable to treatment with CK.

#3 I would wait and see how she is doing first, and then choose one from the available facilities as listed at www.accuray.com
