Hi there I had cyberknife treatment last November for a spinal AVM and I have heard of people who have developed symptoms quite a long time after having the treatment. I have recently developed a pain just above my navel. The skin feels very sensitive (as though it has been burnt) and occasionally I have sharp pains. I have also developed a tingling feeling along my left side which gets worse after I have been active but then subsides. I'm concerned that these are all effects of the treatment or of the AVM. I had a check up in July which showed that the treatment seems to be working on the AVM but I was hoping that I wouldn't develop too many other issues from having the treatment. Could these conditions be caused by the treatment? Any information would be appreciated!! Joanne

The tingling could be related, the pain less likely. Generally speaking, damage to nerves from radiation more likely causes loss of function (tingling, numbness, something does not work) than irritation (pain). But regrdless of the odds, you need evaluation. Call the CK center and let them take a look. They will likely want a scan.

My son has an AVM in the left frontal lobe and was diagnosed after onset of new seizure. Recently, he was treated with Cyberknife. Two days after treatment he had another seizure. How long should we expect side effects and what other side effects should we expect. He had not had a seizure since middle of September. Treatment of anti seizure medication Keppra and will begin Lamictal tomorrow. Increasing from 750 mg Keppra two times daily and now Lamictil once a day for two weeks then increasing to two times daily. My son has an AVM on the left frontal lobe. Very close to the memory motor speech. Recently, received Cyberknife treatment. Onset of a seizure 2 days post last treatment. How long should we expect possible side effects and what other side effects may be encountered.

The frontal lobe is a relatively favorable area for treatment in terms of side effects. Seizures can come from the AVM or from temporary irritation from treatment. They may go away or may be permanent even if the AVM is eliminated. You are going to have to just control them for now. Other side effects are possible, but it would be difficult to predict without seeing the scans. It can take up to two years to eliminate the AVM and the risk of a bleed continues until it is gone.
