Hi there

I am trying to assist a friend (female, age 46, non smoker - never smoked) who has had the following diagnosis and treatments to date for Lung and Liver tumours.

March 2009 - Routine x-ray in March showed tumour in lung.  Largeish tumour in the upper third of right lung.   Spreads from close to the edge of the lung to the middle.  The mediastasis is clear.   A bronchoscopy report showed it to be a non-small cell lung cancer (adenocarcinoma).  A PET scan also showed metastatis on the liver.

April 2009 - Started 12 week course of chemotherapy: Cisplatin Clinical Trial (combined with GemCarbo (Gemcitabin/ Carboplatin)

May 2009 - Scan at halfway point of trial showed some shrinkage on all tumours

July 2009 - Scan results three weeks after final treatment showed that tumours in lung have grown slightly, but worryingly the ones on the liver have grown quite a bit (1.8cm to 2.7cm).  Believe there are two tumours on liver, one large (above), one small.  Do not know location of liver tumours. Hospital offered two options1) watch and wait 2) Tarceva

My friend is intending to seek treatments via private healthcare.  Do you know of any CyberKnife centres with specific, positive experience of lung cancer that has spread to the liver?

We are seeking the best ‘next’ avenue to go down and/or if any of the following are possible:

Laser surgery (e.g. cyberknife) to remove/reduce liver tumour/s

Conventional surgery on either liver (as this is now perhaps the more worrying element?), or lung

Other chemos that might work as last chemo failed.

Kindest regards - Julie

CyberKnife is not laser surgery. It is very highly focused radiation. It is hard to comment on possible surgery for the liver tumors, but I doubt she would be a candidate. The two most likely possibilities are RFA and CK treatment. CK is probably roughly equivalent to RFA in terms of results and is much less invasive. The complication rate is also probably lower. Whether CK would be useful for the lung would depend on a number of factors. I would suggest you let the nearest CK center take a look and see what they say. If they say no, you might want to get another opinion. Some centers are more conservative than others.

My name is Alina and I am writing on behalf of my mother who was diagnosed with colon cancer and liver metastazes on April 2008. The colon cancer was removed chirurgical. She made some chemo and stoped doing it on Februrary this year but she continued to make the treatment using AVASTIN. The liver tumor on February this year was 8.5 cm also the CT showed that she has 2 tumors of 3cm on her lung.

This month another CT was made and is showing that her liver is 75-80% covered with tumor and the ones on the lungs got dubled.

This week she started another chemo tratement stronger then the first two and she started loosing weight and feeling sick, untill this chemo she was eating relativelly normal and she was still going to work.

She also made a test that is showing that the cancerous gene had some mutations.

I am living in Canada and she is in Romania. I have all the CD with the CT and all the copies after her tests.

Can you please tell me if Cyberknife treatement would be an alternative for her or what is the best thing to do.

With apprciation,

Alina Radu

CK would not be able to treat that extensive a liver tumor. Chemotherapy is her only option.
